Why Deep Tissue or Sports Massage?

The main purpose of deep tissue or sports massage is to help reduce the tension and stress which accumulates in the tissues of the body during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them down quickly, efficiently and effectively. Also, sports massage can help prevent any potential injuries that would affect performance, achievement and physical work in everyday life.

Sport massage is useful for everyone, not just athletes and sports people. Everyone can benefit from sports massage, including people in physically demanding jobs and those not quite so obvious. Occupational, emotional and postural stress may produce many similar characteristics to sports injuries.

The human body is continually being placed under stress. Sometimes this is elective, ie through sports training, At other times it may be involuntary, for example, poor posture at a desk.

How the body reacts and copes is dependant on age, lifestyle, activity, and body form.

To perform well the body needs to recover well, and failure to recover properly can lead to injury over time. Also if the body is out of balance, for example favouring one part of the body  can lead to compensations which again can lead to injury. Sports massage is more and more being seen as a preventative measure, rather than the 'get it fixed when it's damaged'  solution.

What is Sport Massage or Deep Tissue Massage?

Sports massage, or deep tissue massage, is deeper and more advanced than regular Swedish massage.

Although based on Swedish massage it incorporates a combination of advanced techniques including stretching, muscle energy techniques, compression, frictions, trigger point therapy, deep tissue applications, neuromuscular techniques, myofascial release and various osteopathic assessment techniques. I may also use k-taping, ultrasound or ice treatment, depending on the issue. I use a combination of techniques, knowledge, experience and advice during sports massage sessions so as to ensure that my clients function more efficiently and that their performance improves.

Prior to sports massage or deep tissue massage work, depending on the issue, I will carry out a detailed assessment in order to ascertain the cause/location of the problem so that the effectiveness of the session is accelerated. After the session I will provide aftercare for the client, which involves instructing the client on which stretching/strengthening exercises to perform in order to accelerate recovery and increase the effectiveness of the sports massage session.
